מי רוצה להיות מליונר?

יעקב ה’:1-6

“ה הוי העשירים, בכו והילילו על הצרות הבאות עליכם. 2 עשרכם נרקב, ובגדיכם היו למאכל עש. 3 זהבכם וכספכם נחלדו, וחלודתם תהיה לעדות נגדכם ותאכל את בשרכם כמו אש. אוצר אצרתם לאחרית הימים! 4 הנה זועק שכר הפועלים קוצרי שדותיכם אשר הלינותם אותו, וצעקת הקוצרים באה באזני יהוה צבאות. 5 חייתם בארץ חיי תענוגות והוללות; סעדתם את לבכם כמו ביום זבח. 6 הרשעתם והרגתם את הצדיק והוא אינו קם עליכם.”

לאחר קריאה של פסוקים אלו מרביתנו בוחרים שלא להיות עשירים. אנחנו קוראים כאן על המשפט הכבד שיחול על עשירי העולם הזה ומוותרים על התענוג. אך יעקב איננו מנסה להעביר לנו מסר זה. הוא אינו מלמד אותנו שכל עשיר מבחינה חומרית בעולם הזה הינו חוטא. הפסוקים האלו מתייחסים לעשירי העולם הזה שכל אשר על ליבם הינו המרדף אחר כסף ועושר. אותם העשירים חפצים בכמות רבה יותר של עושר ואינם מסתפקים לעולם גם אם יגרום הדבר לרעתם של אחרים.

אנחנו קוראים על אנשים רבים שהיו עשירים בכתובים, למשל: איוב ואברהם. אלו היו עשירים וצדיקים כאחד. ההבדל בין העשירים המיוחסים בפסוקים אלו באגרת יעקב לבין איוב ואברהם הינו שהעשירים האלו לא נתנו לעבדיהם את שכרם בעתו. הם נהיו לעשירים בכך שגזלו ועשקו את הפועלים שלהם, בכך שאצרו אוצרות בכספם של השכירים שלהם בשעה ששכיריהם גוועו ברעב ונותרו בצורך כלכלי. העשירים המיוחסים בפסוקים האלו הינם רמאים וגנבים.

כסף ניתן לנו בתור אמצעי ולא בתור תכלית. אלוהים אינו מורה לנו להיות עניים, אך מורה לנו לשים לב למקומו של ליבנו בכל הקשור לכסף. האם אנחנו רואים כסף בתור אמצעי בחיינו או בתור תכלית חיינו? יעקב מזהיר את העשירים האלו שבסופו של יום הדבר היחידי איתו הם יעמדו במשפט אל מול אלוהים יהיה ריקבון וחלודה, אלו יהיו לעדות כנגדם ביום הדין.

Who wants to be a millionaire?

James 5:1-6

“1 Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. 2 Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. 4 Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. 5 You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.[a] 6 You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you.”

After reading this passage most of us choose not to be rich. We are reading about the heavy judgment that will be on the rich men of this world and choose to pass. But James is not trying to teach us that any man who is rich is a sinner. These verses refer to those rich men whose heart is chasing after money and richness. Those rich men desire a greater deal of richness and will never be satisfied even if the cost means hurting other people.

We read of many rich people in the bible for example: Job and Abraham. These men we’re both rich and righteous. The difference between the rich people referred to in the book of James and them is that these rich men talked about in James became rich by stealing and robbing from their workers. They did not pay their workers on time, thereby making money off their salary and leaving them in great financial need. These rich men are thieves and cheaters.

Money is given to us as a means and not as a purpose. God is not instructing us to be poor, but to watch our hearts attitude towards money. Do we see money as a means or a purpose? James is warning these rich men that in the end of their lives they will stand in front of God on judgment day only with rust and rot and these will testify against them.
