Our Savior and our Example-מושיענו ומופת לנו

Our Savior and our Example

1 Peter 2:18-25

In the previous verses leading up to this passage, Peter is calling the believers to live their lives as servants of God. By choosing to offer our lives to God we release ourselves from the bondage of sin and this world; we submit our lives completely to God out of the understanding that He’s what’s best for us. We’re all servants, the question is: who is our master- God or this world?

In verse 18 Peter speaks to the slaves and calls them to submit to their masters, even when they are harsh with them. During that time in history, slavery was very popular and it appears that many slaves who came to follow Yeshua faced many challenges. In verses 19-20 we read that one who suffers unjustly will be blessed for he suffers for obeying the Lord and for being an example to those around him. Submitting to a nice and good master does not require much effort, but submitting to a harsh one requires much.

Peter opens verse 21 with these words: “To this you were called…” meaning that we are called to suffer and identify with Yeshua, for He is our example and we’re to desire to be like Him. The next verses describe Yeshua to us: a blameless Messiah, a man that had not sinned, suffered but didn’t retaliate, receiving His suffering as the will of His father; He suffered and carried our sins on the cross. He did all of this so that we would receive atonement of sin and be reconciled to the Father. We must understand the difficulty Yeshua had in fulfilling His Father’s call, He knew that He would suffer greatly and yet He submitted to His Father. Looking closely we’ll see that Yeshua’s example is very different from this world’s standards, obedience and forgiveness are seen as weaknesses. The world would say that we should firstly and foremost take care for ourselves before others.

Let us not come under the lies of this world, but lift our eyes to Yeshua and learn from Him regarding God’s expectations from us His faithful servants.
