Go Forth! (Parashat Lekh Lekha)

Beresheet (Genesis) 12:1-17:27

“Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, and from your relatives and from your father’s house, to the land which I will show you; ” Genesis 12:1

Our Parasha this week starts with the Lord’s command to Abram to “go forth…” to get up and leave everything that he knew – his country, his home, his relatives and (the hardest) his father’s house – and head to a new land that God would show him. God’s command to Abram no doubt required an incredible amount of faith on Abram’s part, to just leave everything familiar and known, for the total unknown; it required him to trust God and that His promises would come to pass.

“And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and so you shall be a blessing; And I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”” Genesis 12:2-3

In essence, God promised to Abram that that He would not only be with him, but also would provide for his needs (to bless him), and protect him (curse those who will curse him). God also promised an incredible blessing for future generations; all the families of the earth would be blessed because of Abram’s obedience! What an incredible gift from the Lord!

But it wasn’t enough for Abram to just believe; he also had to act.

“So Abram went forth as the LORD had spoken to him; and Lot went with him. Now Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.” Genesis 12:4

A very interesting point that we often do not acknowledge is the fact that Abram was seventy five years old when he received this command from the Lord; for a man of that age to take such a step of faith, to leave everything he knew and move to a completely new and unknown place – essentially, to start over from scratch – was no small thing. But as I mentioned before, Abram believed God, and showed his faith through the actions of his life.

Whenever I read this account of Abram, I am always reminded of a very similar command made by Yeshua, who told us in Matthew 28 to also “Go”…

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, immersing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”” Matthew 28:19-20

Just like Abram, we disciples of Yeshua, are also called to leave our comfort zone, that which is familiar – and maybe even leave our home and families – to follow Him into uncharted territory; this is what is required of all of us in some way if we are to do the will of God in our lives. In the same way that God promised Abram blessing and protection, so has He promised that we are not alone, that He is with us (present tense!) until the very end.

Before Yeshua gave us the command to “go”, He reminded us of the truth of His power when He said, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” Matthew 28:18b.

My dear brothers and sisters, the God in whom we believe and are called to trust is the same God in whom Abram believed and trusted

. He is the One and only living and true God, and you can trust Him wherever you are.

Where is God calling you to “go”? Do you trust Him to lead you, provide for you, and protect you? Do you know that your obedience can also leave a legacy for future generations?

I want to encourage you to trust God, and to put your faith into action each and every day; only then can you know that our God is a living and faithful God who can be trusted every step of the way.

Shabbat Shalom,

Moran
