אמונה ומעשים

 יעקב פרק ב’ פסוקים 14-26

פסוק 14 פותח בשאלה: האם אמונה ללא מעשים תוכל להושיענו? התשובה לשאלה ניתנת בצורת משל המתאר את אחינו השרויים במצוקה כלכלית, ללא בגדים ומזון ופונים אלינו לעזרה. אנו הקוראים לעצמנו מאמינים משלחים אותם מבלי לתת מענה אמיתי למצוקתם. אם כך אנו נוהגים כיצד הועלנו להם?

את מסרו של המשל אנו מבינים בצורה ברורה מפסוק 17 המסביר לנו שאמונה ללא מעשים היא מתה. האמונה לא תוכל לעמוד לבדה מבלי המעשים, שהרי האמונה באה לידי ביטוי במעשים.

בפסוקים 18-19 יעקב מציג אתגר בו נקרא אדם להוכיח את אמונתו ללא מעשים, בהמשך הפסוק אנו מבינים כי הדבר הוא בלתי אפשרי ומנגד עומד אדם המבקש להוכיח את אמונתו דרך מעשיו, הלא זוהי בעצם הדרך היחידה להוכיח אותה משום שהמעשים הם השתקפות האמונה.

פסוק 20 פותח בקריאת גנאי של יעקב כלפי אלו שלא הבינו את מסרו, הוא מתאר אותם כאנשים בורים על שלא הכירו בהבנה הבסיסית שאמונה ללא מעשים אינה מניבה פרי ומתעקש להעניק תמיכה לטענתו על ידי דוגמאות לאנשים מן התנ”ך שזכו לצדקה בזכות מעשיהם. הראשון מביניהם הוא אברהם אבינו שהיה מוכן להקריב את בנו יצחק ובזכות זה זכה להכרה באמונתו ואף כונה “אוהב אלוהים”, אחריו מתוארת רחב הזונה שסיפקה מחסה לשליחי יהושע וסיכנה למענם את חייה, שניהם זכו לצדקתם בזכות מעשיהם שנבעו מאמונה.

אמונה ללא מעשים מקבילה לגוף חסר רוח, השניים הם בלתי נפרדים אחד מן השני ולכן כשם שהגוף ללא הרוח מת הוא כך גם האמונה ללא המעשים מתה היא!

Faith and Actions

James 2:14-16

Verse 14 opens up with a question: can faith that has no actions save our souls? The answer is given to us through an allegory. This allegory describes our brothers and sisters in a difficult financial situation, they have no clothes and food and they turn to us for some help. We, who call ourselves believers, send them away empty handed. Do we help them by acting this way?

We understand the main message of this allegory in a clear way through verse 17, which explains us that faith without actions, is dead. Faith cannot stand without any actions, for faith is shown by actions.

In verse 18-19 James tells us of the challenge that a man will face once he is called to show his faith with no actions. Through the rest of the verses we understand that it is impossible. On the other hand we are told of another man who is called to show his faith through actions, which is the only way you can show your faith.

In verse 20 James calls those who do not understand his message, “ignorant” for they didn’t understand that faith without actions is good for nothing. He is backing his clam with examples of people from the bible that received a blessing for their actions. The first one is Abraham, he was willing to give up his son Isaac and through that he showed his faith and was called a “lover of God”, James goes on telling us about Rehab that gave shelter to the spies and risked her own life for them. Both of them received a blessing because of their faith that was shown through their actions.

Faith without actions is like a body with no spirit, both are inseparable, and just as a body without a spirit is dead so is faith without actions.
