הכל בשליטה

יעקב ה’:7-11

הקטע שנלמד היום מתקשר לקטע שלפניו (פסוקים 1-6). יעקב כותב כעת לכל אלו שעוברים קושי על ידי החטא שנמצא בעולם (ביחוד אלו שהמעסיקים שלהם עושקים אותם וגוזלים מהם). יעקב מחדד את העובדה שיש לנו שופט גדול והוא ישפוט את כל בני האדם בסופו של יום. השופט הגדול, אלוהים, נמצא בשליטה ואנחנו נקראים לחכות בסבלנות.

יעקב קורא ליהודים שבתפוצות להתאזר בסבלנות ואורך רוח. לא קל לנו להתמודד עם סבל או עם חוסר צדק אבל יעקב מורה לנו להחזיק מעמד ולייחל לאדון בציפייה. הוא נותן לנו כמשל את חייו של איכר. איכר מנהל את כל יומו וחייו במקביל ללוח הזמנים של מזג האוויר. הוא חורש את הקרקע, זורע זרעים בזמנים מדוייקים ומחכה לגשם. כל חייו סובבים סביב הפרי היקר שהאדמה תצמיח. הוא תלוי בפרי לפרנסתו ולהאכלת בני משפחתו. הוא יודע שאם האדמה לא תהיה מוכנה כאשר הגשם יופיע הוא לא יכול להנות מהפרי היקר. הוא גם מודה לכך שאם לא ירד גשם באותה השנה כל עבודתו לריק.

חייו של איכר מלווים בהכנה, סבלנות ואמונה. הוא מודע לכך שיש מישהו אחר ששולט בגשם, ויחד עם זאת הוא מודע לכך שאחריות מוטלת על כתפיו להיות מוכן. חיים כאלו יעקב קורא לנו לחיות. הוא קורא לנו לחיות את חיינו באמונה וידיעה שאלוהים נמצא בשליטה על נסיבות חיינו ועל המשפט העתידי, אך יחד עם זאת להכין את ליבנו ליום הדין. הוא קורא לנו להתלונן זה על זה ובכך לשפוט אותם על פי ראות עיניינו, אלא לסבול בשקט ובסבלנות עד שהאדון, השופט הגדול, יתחיל במשפט.

אלוהים נמצא בשליטה על חיינו. הוא בשליטה על האחרית שלנו והוא נאמן לשלם לכל איש על פי מעשיו. אנחנו לא יכולים לשלוט בנסיבות החיים וברצונם החופשי של אחרים, אך עלינו מוטלת האחריות על מעשינו אנו ועל מצב ליבנו.

Everything is under control

James 5:7-11

James is writing to all those who are going through struggles due to the sin in the world (mostly those who are under employers who do not pay them on time). James is clarifying the fact that we have a high judge who will judge every man and woman in the last days. The high judge, God, is in control and we are called to wait on him patiently.

James is calling the Jews in exile to hold on and be patient. It is not easy to go through hardships and injustice but James is instructing us to hold on and wait for the Lord with expectation. He is giving us the allegory of the life of a peasant. The peasant revolves his life around the calendar of the weather. He works the land and sows seeds in the right time and waits for the rain. All his life concerns around this costly fruit that the land will bear. He is dependent on this fruit for his living and in order to feed his family. He knows the land has to be ready before the rain comes or he will not be able to enjoy this fruit. He is also well aware of the fact that if the rain doesn’t come all his work was in vain.

The life of a peasant holds a lot of preparation, patience and faith. He knows that someone else controls the rain, and with it he knows very well that it is his responsibility to be ready for the rain. This is the life James is calling us to live. He is calling us to live a life of faith and understand that God is in control of our life circumstances and the upcoming judgment day. With this we need to get our hearts ready for that day. James is telling us not to complain about one another and by doing so we will judge them according to our own sight, but to hold on and wait for the Lord, the high Judge, to start his trial.

God is in control of our lives. He holds our future and is faithful to pay each man according to his deeds. We cannot control life’s circumstances and other people’s free will, but we hold the responsibility over our actions and the place of our hearts.
