Israel’s Under 20 soccer team stunned the world on Saturday with a 3-2 overtime victory over Brazil. The victory was a major upset for soccer fans; many did not expect Israel to make it to the tournament, much less to the semi-finals, while Brazil was a favorite to the win the title. The team’s three goals were scored by three different players, showing both the cooperation and the diversity of the team. One of the goal scorers was Bedouin, one was Israeli Arab, and one was Jewish! This was an incredible example of equality of opportunity in Israel.
Today, Thursday, the team will face off against Uruguay in the semi-final match. After tense months of internal division and external pressure, Israelis rejoice in positive publicity for the nation and in the opportunity to unite around a common cause.
Please pray for favor and calm for the team on their way to victory tonight against Uruguay. Please pray that the match will continue to have a unifying effect in Israel. Lastly, please pray that the team’s diversity would bring people across the globe to a better understanding of the Jewish state!
