In the beginning verses of Chapter 3, we see that God instructs us to lay aside our old self. In this week’s verses, we see that laying aside our old self doesn’t end with us becoming a vacuum (having a void where sin once dwelt), but rather being fully filled and clothed by God as a new self. By the power of the Holy Spirit, we put on righteousness in place of the old rags of sin and death that once defined us. When we put off the old self, we must immediately put on the new self. Our faith is kind of like football: If we’re not advancing, we’re being pushed backwards. So how do we advance?

First consider… are you a butterfly or a snake?

בפסוקים בתחילת פרק ג׳ אנחנו רואים שאלוהים אומר לנו להיפטר מכל דבר רע ששוכן בקרבנו ובעצם לפשוט את האדם הישן. בפסוקים אלה אנחנו יכולים להבין שהבשורה זה לא רק כל מה ש”אסור“ אלא התחדשות כלומר לבישת גוף חדש לאחר שפשטנו את האדם הישן ונפטרנו מהדברים הרעים. עלינו למלא את עצמנו בדברים טובים שאלוהים רוצה שנתהלך בהם. אנחנו לא וָקוּם (חלל ריק). אנחנו אמורים לחיות חיים מלאים ברוח הקודש. אין זמן לא לזוז ולעמוד במקום. החיים הם פוטבול: אנחנו תמיד צריכים להיות בתזוזה קדימה כי ברגע שעומדים נדחפים אחורה.

תשאלו את עצמככם האם אתה פרפר או נחש?

• When a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, it can’t even be recognized as the caterpillar it once was (the old self).

• A snake undergoes a very different process of transformation. Even though it sheds its skin (the old self), it remains the exact same creature.

• פרפר עובר תהליך מזחל לפרפר ולא מזהים את השינוי. מהתהליך שעובר נוצר יצור חדש שלא ניתן לזיהוי—הוא משתנה לגמרי.

• נחש עובר תהליך אחר. הוא משיל את העור שלו אבל הוא עדיין נראה אותו דבר—השינוי החיצוני לא נראה לעין, הוא נשאר אותו דבר.

We need to aspire to be more like the butterfly in our transformative process and less like the snake. When we walk with Yeshua, we give up the ways of the caterpillar and adopt the ways of the butterfly. The evil ways of the old self must not be a part of our life as we are transformed by the Holy Spirit.

In verses 12–13, Paul instructs us to “as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Just as we are chosen by God, holy and beloved, we must put on the proper attire.

אנחנו צריכים לשאוף להיות בחיינו פרפר ולא נחש. אנחנו רוצים שינוי כאשר כל מי שיראה אותנו לא יזהה אותנו, שהבנאדם הישן ייעלם ויופיע אדם חדש בעזרתו ובחסדו של אלוהים שמשנה אותנו בצורה שאנחנו לא ניתנים לזיהוי לאחר שאנחנו מחליטים ללכת עם ישוע.

בפס׳ 12-13, שאול אומר לנו להתלבש כפי שאנחנו, כלומר יש לנו זהות ”בחירי אלוהים קדושים ואהובים, לבשו חמלה ורחמים ונדיבות לב, נמיכות רוח וענווה וארך אפים“. בגלל שאנחנו בחירי אלוהים קדושים ואהובים, אנחנו חייבים להתלבש בהתאם.

• Chosen
  God has chosen us because He loves us. He is the one transforming us from a caterpillar into a butterfly. We can’t do it on our own.

• Holy
  We are set apart by God in this transformative process and we remain set apart by Him.

• Put on…
  The Greek word here literally refers to putting on clothes. This is a daily task.

• Compassion
  It is by being clothed in God’s compassion that we are transformed.

• Kindness
  The well being of others is important to me.

• Humility
  This requires allowing our pride to be set aside so that we can truly be as considerate of those around us as is good and right to be.

• Gentleness
  Not severe or extreme, but even-tempered.

• Patient
  Not quick to give up on those around us.

• Bearing with one another
  Forgiving one another as Yeshua has also done, forgiving those who hurt him.

• בחיר
  אלוהים בחר בנו כי הוא אוהב אותנו. הוא אחראי על תהליך השינוי שלנו מזחל לפרפר. אנחנו לא יכולים לעשות את השינוי הזה לבד.

• קדוש
  זה בעצם להיבדל, להיות מופרד. להיות שונה זה חלק מהזהות הבסיסית של המאמין.

• לבשתם
  לבשו זה היחס התמידי של החיים השתננו אבל זה לא נגמר באופן חד פעמי זה תהליך.

• חמלה
  זה כמו פרפרים בבטן אלוהים מצפה לתגובה פיזית לרגשות אמיתיים וכנים.

• נדיבות
  טובת האחר חשובה לי כמו טובתי האישית.

• נמיכות רוח
  ממש לרדת ולהתנהל בצורה שמתחשבת באחריםלעומת תרבות שאומרת לנו לשים את עצמנו במרכז ולהשפיל אחרים.

• ענווה
  כוח מתון, להתאפק ולא להתגאות.

• ארך אפים
  ההפך מזעם וסבלנות כמו שאלוהים סבלן ומחכה לנו.

• לנהוג בסבלנות
  לסלוח כמו שישוע עשה הוא סבל אבל גם סלח לחוטאים לאלה שפגעו בו.

In verse 14, we read: “Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.” In the Greek attire, the belt held everything together. Likewise, love holds everything together. Without love, we can’t live in the way that God requires of us. When we love, we can truly enjoy the “perfect bond of unity”.

Verses 16–17 say: “Let the word of Messiah richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another…. Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Yeshua, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.” The word of Messiah must dwell within us. God instructs us to instruct and admonish one another with wisdom. All of this flows from having the Word of God within us. We admonish and instruct one another out of love for one another and for no other reason. Every day, we are to give thanks to God with “psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs”, we are to declare his glory with our mouths. All of this is to be done in the name of Yeshua.

בפס׳ 14 כתוב:”מעל לכל אלה תשרור האהבה שהיא קשר השלמות“. כמו שבלבוש יווני החגורה החזיקה את הכל, כך גם האהבה היא זאת שמחברת ומחזיקה את הכל. בלי אהבה אנחנו לא יכולים לנהוג בצורה שאלוהים מבקש מאיתנו. כאשר אנחנו אוהבים אנחנו מסוגלים למלא את בקשת אלוהים ולנהוג אחד כלפי השני לפי רצונו.

פס׳ 16-17 אומר:”דבר המשיח ישכון נא בקרבכם בשפע:למדו והוכיחו זה את זה במלוא חכמה: שירו לאלוהים… וכל מה שתעשו הן באומר הן במעשה עשו הכל בשם האדון ישוע והודו לאלוהים אבינו באמצעותו“. דבר המשיח צריך לגור בבית שלנו, בנו הוא צריך להיות חלק מאיתנו. אלוהים אומר להוכיח אחד את השני בחכמה (הכוונה היא להזהיר או ללמד אחד את השני). כל זה נובע כתוצאה מדבר אלוהים ששוכן בקרבנו. עלינו להוכיח מתוך דאגה שנובעת מהלב כלפי האחים שלנו ולא משום מניע אחר. עלינו כל יום להודות לאלוהים דרך שירים שמהללים אותו ונותנים לו כבוד דרך הפה שלנו. עלינו לעשות כל דבר בחיינו בשם ישוע המשיח, להתנהג לפי אמות המידה שלו ולבוא בלב נקי אחד אל השני.
