Israel’s government leaders avoided plunging the country into its fourth election in less than two years by postponing a deadline for passage of a national budget in the parliament. By law, a budget must be passed by August 25th in order to avoid automatic elections. Both PM Netanyahu and Defense Minister, Benny Gantz, encouraged their parties to back a proposed law delaying passing the budget by 120 days. Announcing elections at this point would potentially trigger a violent uprising throughout the country, where there is already high tension between people who support Netanyahu and those who do not.
