In an unprecedented shift in policy, the president of Israel has appointed the party that received less votes in the elections to attempt to form a coalition due to greater support within the Knesset for the leadership of that party (the Likud). The challenge is that the Likud cannot form a coalition unless other parties backpedal on their promises to their constituents or unless Netanyahu is proved innocent of the corruption charges that he is now facing.
